Common questions

Before your first visit

Do I need a referral to see you?
Yes, in California you need a referral from a qualified healthcare provider to receive nutritional counseling from a registered dietitian. This is required by state law to ensure coordinated care between your healthcare providers.
Who can provide a referral?
Any licensed healthcare provider who can prescribe dietary treatments can provide your referral. This typically includes medical doctors (MDs), nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and osteopathic doctors (DOs).
What should the referral include?
Your healthcare provider needs to provide a written prescription with their signature, your medical diagnosis, and either specific diet instructions or the goals for your dietary treatment.
I called my insurance and they told me I do not need a referral. Do I still need one?
Yes — you still need a referral to see a registered dietitian in California, even if your insurance company says you don’t. California state law requires it. This is a legal requirement independent of insurance rules.
What should I expect during a consultation with a dietitian?
You can expect to discuss your medical history, current diet and exercise habits, and your goals. The dietitian will then assess your needs and create a personalized plan, with resources and support to help you follow it.
